The View From Up Here

The View From Up Here

…the slow cataclysm of neglect…
Cormac McCarthy, from Suttree

If the universe
has passed along
my message

It is ignored,
as surely as the rain
blights my winter,
making my path
dangerous and slick.

I carefully tread,
testing the surface.
Not trusting myself,
not trusting anyone.

Your silence
always impresses me.
You always did have
more will-power.

I am broken surfaces.
Wheels spinning on ice.
A slush field.
Eyes straining in darkness.
