Like a Kiss

Like a Kiss

I can’t write without a reader. It’s precisely like a kiss–you can’t do it alone. ~John Cheever

I am a writer without a reader.
There is a price for my soul
and here it is,
a placid quietude
where the turbulent desire
used to be.

Phrases breathe
in and out.
The poetry departs
as reality
drifts into position
and clicks.

I love you freely,
pouring myself
into your empty cup
for you to spill out
or sip.

Detachment
costs nothing
but the words.
