I am the new person drawn toward you

Walt Whitman poetry

In the spirit of Walt Whitman on his anniversary of his death, inspired by “Are you the new person drawn toward me?”

***

I am the new person drawn toward you

I am the new person drawn toward you,
even more obvious and simple than you may suppose.
And I suppose you won’t let me touch you,
And I suppose you won’t let me kiss you with my eager tongue,
And I suppose you will think it complicated to be my lover,
And I suppose our friendship may already be laden with troubles.
And I suppose you won’t think me trustworthy or faithful,
And I suppose you sometimes question my facade,
And I suppose you have your doubts about my sincerity,
But have no thought, O beauty, that I am illusory.
I am as wicked and angelic as the next person,
but the only sure arrow firing madly at your heart.
