Brave Anatomy

My heart pumps honey–
I am proud of it.

A tangled vine guards it,
a velvet cloth covers it,
a silver key hole
provides a small view.

Oscillating tissue
of muscle and sinew
elicits a dark flush
and rush of blood
and pitch.

I run hands
through soft silver,
I touch
your thawed surface,
I trace summer
on your back,

breathing in
skin and soap and flame,
opening our heart’s door
on a smooth hinge,

dim curls of smoke
threading their way
from wax and dust
to heaven.
